The devel opment and the growth o f the pattern of church architectur e is shown . Dreyer i n this film sh ows a series of church es from d ifferent p eriods with ch urchgoers in period clothi ng. Each period is sepa rated by a shot of a church bell double -exposed on the sky. Althoug h the film has a vibr ant and instructiv e way of commun icating th e different epo chs and st yles to students, it does n ot exhi bit the artisti c qualit y that usual ly distin guishes a Dreyer film, except p erhaps in some of the costume s, which were or iginally made for Day of Wrat h. The b oard of D ansk Ku lturfilm in a utumn 194 5 decided that their pla nned church f ilm wou ld exclusively be about villa ge churches. Dr eyer would rework the scr ipt that was written by editor an d folk h igh-school princip al Bernhard Jensen, ai ded by a committee of experts co nsisting of architect H. Lønborg-Jensen and Victor He rmansen , cura tor at the National Museum of Den mark. Dreyer had a first draft ready in mid-Marc h, entitled Kirken er et gammelt Hus (&quo t;The Ch urch Is an Old House&quot ;), which was distribut ed to the memb ers of the c ommittee f or their com ments. In the last half of July, Dreyer and Victor Herm ansen tr avelled the c ountry to loo k at sui table churche s. They researche d the detai ls and at Dreyer’s re quest a number of technica l change s were made t o the ch urches, in cluding th e removal of porcelain holders for electr ical wir ing in T veje Merløs e Church. On 4 July, Dreyer w ent in advance to Ringk øbing. Sho oting was se t to st art a few days late r with the arrival of the dir ector of photo graphy, Pr eben Fra nk, who had f allen off a ladder and broken hi s leg, F ortunatel y, he was read y to cauti ously start wo rking again wit hin a f ew days, wi th his leg in a cast. Ot herwise, t he product ion went without a gl itch. Everywher e, Dre yer said, they were well rec eived at th e vicar ages and they had no proble m gettin g enough extras. On 1 august, the y returne d to Cope nhagen with al most all their footage in th e can. They only ne eded to f ilm the church in Skelby, where the we ather had been against them, plus a Swedish woode n church in H edared. The eco nomy was dist ressed s o soon after the war, es peciall y when it came to foreign currency, but there were no real wooden c hurches lef t in Denmark and buildin g an inter ior set in the studio would be too expensi ve. The f inished film w as shown for the firs t time on 24 Septe mber 1947 to a small, clos ed circle, which in cluded the Ministe r for Eccles iastical Affair s. In Dec ember 1947, as was Dansk Kultur film’s standa rd practic e, the film wa s present ed to the p ress, politic ians and others on a progra mme with four other short films.详情
