Forced to trave l on foot after his horse wa s hurt, S haw at first considers st ealing Crei ghton&#39 ;s horse, bu t changes his min d and take s the man with h im, sa ving his life. Sometim e later, foll owing his re covery, Creighton re turns to Om aha, Nebra ska and p lans the constructio n of a telegr aph line from Omaha to Salt Lake City, Utah. Facing co nsidera ble oppo sition t o the line fro m Confederate soldiers, Indians, and outlaws, C reighton elicits th e help of his s ister S ue (Virginia Gilmore) , foreman Pa t Grogan (Minor Watson ), and assista nt Homer Ke ttle (Chill Wills) . Lookin g to put his outlaw p ast behind h im, Shaw arrives at Cr eighton&am p;#39;s Wes tern Union office look ing for honest work and is hired as a scout by Groga n who is unaware of his past. C reighton reco gnizes him am ong the men a nd allows him to stay de spite his s uspicions. Cr eighton also h ires tender foot Richard Blake ( Robert Young) , a Harva rd-educ ated engineer as a fav or to Blake& amp;#39;s fathe r. Shaw and Bla ke are bot h attracted to Sue and vie f or her atte ntion, but t heir ro mantic rivalry is cut short when construc tion of the tel egraph line sta rts on Ju ly 4, 1861. Af ter work com mences on the line, o ne of the men is kill ed apparently by a mysterious band of cattl e-rustling Indians. Unco nvinced that In dians are to bla me, Sha w rides ou t to inves tigate and f ollows the rust lers&am p;#39; trail t o the camp of Jack Slad e, a form er friend an d cohort, wh ose gang comm itted the k illing disguis ed as Ind ians—the gang Shaw left f ollowing his l ast bank r obbery. S lade reveals that they a re working for the Confedera cy to d isrupt Weste rn Union becaus e they believe the telegraph service will help th e Union. Shaw rides aw ay and r eturns to the line. No t wanting to turn in his former friends, Shaw tells Creig hton that a la rge band of Dakota In dians stole t he cattle, a nd recommen ds that they s imply repla ce the herd and n ot risk a figh t with the Ind ians. Some time later, a confrontati on takes place betwe en men working on the f orward l ine and a ba nd of dr unken Indians. When one of the Indian s tries to steal some eq uipment, a nervous Blake shoots him, ignorin g Shaw&# 39;s or der to re main calm. After wo rd arriv es that th e main cam p is under att ack by ot her Indians, t he Western Union men rush back to help wit h the d efense. At th e main camp, Slade&# 39;s men, who are aga in disguise d as Indians, steal the West ern Union horses . The company d iscover the ruse when one of the wounded Ind ians tur ns out to be a white man. Forced to buy ba ck their stolen hors es from Sl ade, Cre ighton be comes suspicio us of Sh aw's involvement, especially when he admits to knowin g the g ang. Soon the U.S. A rmy arrives and announces the Indians hav e now refused to allow th e telegraph li nes to go thr ough the ir terr itory in response to Bl ake&#39 ;s shooting of the drunken Ind ian. Cre ighton, Sh aw, and Blake ride out to c onvince Chi ef Spotted H orse to allo w them to bui ld the lin e through Ind ian territory , even tho ugh the man Blake wo unded wa s Spotted Horse 's s on. Creighto n is fina lly able to persua de the In dians to allow them passag e, and work c ontinues unti l the company approach es Salt L ake City. So metime later, Shaw receives word that Jack Slade wa nts to meet with him. On the way to see Slad e, Shaw i s captu red and b ound by Slade&a mp;#39;s men. S lade says hi s group is g oing to bur n down the W estern Uni on camp and they don& amp;#39;t wan t Shaw to interfer e. After S lade and his men ride off, Sha w escap es from his ropes but a rrives back too late to pr event the fire . He helps re scue some of the Western Union m en from th e flames and burns his ha nds in the proc ess. After the fire, Creighton co nfronts Shaw fo r an explanat ion, bu t Shaw does not revea l what h e knows a nd is fired by Creighto n. As Shaw leaves the camp, he tells B lake that Slade is actu ally Shaw&# 39;s brot her and that he, Shaw, wi ll find Sl ade& #39;s gang and stop the m from int erferin g with t he telegrap h projec t. Shaw rid es off and find s Slade and his men in a nea rby town. A t the bar ber shop, Shaw con fronts his brother, w hose gun is con cealed under th e barber&a mp;#39;s sheet . Slade shoot s Shaw through the sheet . Shaw figh ts back in sp ite of his wound, killin g some of the gang mem bers, and then di es. Blake arri ves and contin ues the fight w ith Slade who dies from his wounds . Soon a fter, the Wes tern Union li ne is co mpleted and the workers celebrate.
