We soo n discover that Paul is a real son- of-a-bi tch who plan s to scare his wife to deat h, pla nning to c ontrol her f ortune a nd continu e his secre t affair with s eductive bad girl M ireille (Silvi a Miró), who happens t o be the ni ece of the t arot card-re ading housek eeper, Mabi le (Lola Gaos). Paul’s malevolent scheme work s, but he sti ll has to wo rry about an ad ditional money -hungry mist ress (this g uy really get s around!), the unforgi ving Mabile, as well as n ew fianceé Mir eille who m ight be hidin g a thin g or two her self. PANIC BEA TS was also w ritten by Naschy ( under his real na me Jacinto Molina) who in jects t he film with a n old-f ashioned spooky hous e motif, be efed up with a modern movi e sense of violence and se xuality. The f ilm offe rs nothin g too in novative storyw ise, and even Naschy a dmits on th e disc’s extr as that it was partly inspired by GASLIG HT and REB ECCA, but he seems to just toss in a hodgepo dge of exploi tation and h orror i ngredien ts, whil e deliveri ng a styli sh and e njoyable effort with a number of t wists and som e genuin ely chilli ng moments. T he camera s hots an d lighting are both effec tive, and there&am p;#39;s eve n does a c ool set-up ( much like wha t Freddie Fra ncis did in THE S KULL and TH E CREEPING FL ESH) where w e see the po int of view of Ma rnac thro ugh his dark helmet as he stalks h is female pr ey. Graphicall y, we are expo sed to everyth ing from a pl ate of bloody eyeball s, to victim s being be aten relentl essly with th e various M edievals wea pons affixed on the house’s walls (for exa mple, someon e is axed in the sto mach, follo wed by t he soaked entr ails ooz ing out!). N aschy’s most frequ ent 1980s leading lady, Julia Saly, is not g iven much to do, but with her offbeat l ooks, i s a nic e prese nce nonet heless.
